From Figure to Ground: How Tech Threatens to Turn Education From an End to a Means.
Public education began as compensation for a life of labor - a recognition of human dignity and the value of learning itself. These ideals have always been at risk of subversion by the needs of industry and the power of capitalism, but the utilitarian affordances of digital technology risk turning the classroom into an extension of job training. How have students become the objects of education rather than the subjects, and how can we retrieve the spirit of learning, both in school and as an essential human expression?
